The Gendered Organisational Practice (GOP) research cluster is marking the International Day Against Homophobia; Transphobia and Biphobia with a special event, presented by The Open University’s own Dr Matthew Jones and Dr Saoirse O’Shea.

Seize the opportunity to learn about the lived experiences of transgender and non-binary prisoners in England and Wales, as well as the ways in which lesbian, gay and bisexual police officers proactively challenge the occupational culture of policing from engaged and insightful researchers with unique access to these contexts.

Dr Nela Smolovic Jones

Dr Nela Smolovic Jones is a Lecturer in Organisation Studies at The Open University's Department for People and Organisations. Her research focuses on the interface between gender and democratic practice, especially areas such as feminist solidarity building, democratic organising, equality at the workplace and institutional forms of gendered corruption.

Nela is also the founder and director of the Gendered Organisational Practice (GOP) research cluster, which sits within the REEF academic centre of excellence. The cluster provides a space in which feminists of any gender can share insights and knowledge from academic study and practice.

Dr Matthew Jones

Dr Matthew Jones is Head of the Department for Policing Organisation and Practice in the Faculty of Business and Law, where he leads a team of interdisciplinary academics developing a portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are delivered to police forces nationally.

An interdisciplinary social scientist, Matthew’s interests include Policing, Criminal Justice Organisations and Management, and Contemporary intersections between LGBT identities and crime / criminal justice organisations.

Matthew is currently the Chair of the national British Society of Criminology Policing Network.

Dr Saoirse O'Shea

Dr Saoirse O'Shea is a non-binary person that joined The Open University in October 2020.

Saoirse has had research published in various academic journals including: Sociology; Organization; Culture and Organization; Management Learning; Gender, Work and Organization.

Saoirse's research interests include how people, particularly those who are vulnerable and marginalised, are organised in heteronormative societies. Saoirse is currently co-lead on a 3 year project with Leicester University concerned with the lived experiences of transgender and non-binary prisoners in the English and Welsh Prison Estate.
