Business Legitimacy: ‘Staying on the “right” side of public opinion… and how to avoid controversy’

The American sociologist Mark Suchman (1995) defines legitimacy as:

"...a generalized perception or assumption that the actions of an entity are desirable, proper, or appropriate within some socially constructed system of norms, values, beliefs and definitions."

During this Breakfast Briefing on 1 November 2016, Dr Björn Claes, Senior Lecturer in Operations Management at OUBS, explored the concept of legitimacy; why it is important to your business in the short and long-term; and how it can help your business adapt and survive in the future.

The briefing aimed to:

  • Give new insights and perspectives into your business
  • Explain how to make you business more responsible
  • Suggest how to improve your reputation in the eyes of the public
