These two streams have until recently developed in a mostly unconnected way from each other. However, a recent paper by Edoardo Ongaro (‘Integrating the Neo Weberian state and Public Value’, International Review of Administrative Sciences - accessible open access here) argues that these two streams of literature would benefit from integrating each other’s perspective into their theoretical frame, and Ongaro outlines the contours of such a framework.

Academic Seminar

In this academic seminar, we explore with world-leading scholars Professors John Benington, Geert Bouckaert and Mark Moore about the benefits and paths of combining Public Value and the Neo-Weberian State. The seminar addresses several key questions including:

  • What is the scope of Public Value theory and practice – is PV an Anglosphere only notion, or does it have a global remit?
  • Does Public Value theory and practice travel well to continental European (and Asia, and Latin American) administrations? If so, under what conditions?
  • What does Public Value mean in a Neo-Weberian state? How can Public Value theory and practice complement and supplement the Neo-Weberian State?
  • When do tensions become contradictions within PV theory and practice? When do tensions become contradictions within the Neo-Weberian State?
  • Integrating Public Value and the Neo-Weberian states: Ways forward?
