Course presenter Bobby Seagull speaks to course producer Martin Upton, as well as two young adults in Nicola and Laura, following the launch of the ‘Managing My Money for Young Adults’ free online course on FutureLearn.
Maths teacher Bobby, now a television personality in his own right, chats with Martin, Director of the True Potential Centre for the Public Understanding of Finance (True Potential PUFin). This is on current and future financial concerns for young adults, ranging from bank or savings accounts, part-time work, student finance, responsible borrowing and even that sure sign of leaving behind your childhood – thinking about starting a pension! They also discuss how different techniques are used on the course such as videos, animation, audio, quizzes and tests to complement the text.
With the course designed to cover the financial education needs of those moving on in their adult lives to employment, apprenticeships and higher education, Bobby also speaks with current GCSE student Nicola together with university graduate and now full-time employee Laura. Nicola speaks about the financial decisions involved of either moving into higher education – and where you then live after university! – or starting an apprenticeship or work experience instead. Although Laura is now financially independent, the course still offers accessible, invaluable information to make informed decisions on those financial services available and to help avoid falling into debt.
The course is fully funded by The Chartered Accountants’ Livery Charity with each of the eight sessions around three hours’ study time. The content has been refreshed and enhanced on both the new FutureLearn version, which has active mentors to encourage discussion, as well as the original OpenLearn one where it can be accessed at any time throughout the year.
