Lessons from lockdown: Reflecting on the experiences of students and tutors during the pandemic

Dates
Thursday, June 8, 2023 - 14:00 to 15:30
Location
Online, Microsoft Teams

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically altered the higher education teaching and learning experience, as staff and students alike pivoted to online environments. While HEIs quickly responded to the need to move operations online, academic staff rushed to support students and ensure continuity of quality learning and teaching. As much of life increasingly returns to how it was before 2020, this timely seminar brings together two pieces of research which examine those pandemic experiences from the perspectives of students and tutors.

Jill Dickinson (Associate Professor in Law, University of Leeds) and Teri-Lisa Griffiths (Senior Lecturer in Criminology, Sheffield Hallam University) will discuss their work using photovoice methods to explore how the changed nature of learning spaces impacted on the student experience.

Hilary Collins (Senior Lecturer, University of the West of Scotland), Hayley Glover (Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Business and Law, The Open University) and Fran Myers (Lecturer in Management, Faculty of Business and Law, The Open University) will present their research on tutors’ experiences of lockdown teaching life using frames of liminality and extreme work, photographic elicitation and narrative analysis to offer understanding into perceptions of physical and online teaching spaces. Their ongoing research looks at academic identity and online pedagogy in the post COVID-19 era, comprising data collection via in-depth interviews with academics from The Open University and a bricks university.

Before the period of pandemic retreats further into history, this seminar presents an opportunity to discuss what we are content to leave in the past and what lessons we should take with us into a post-pandemic future.

This seminar is hosted by The Open University’s Scholarship Centre for innovation in online Legal and Business Education (SCiLAB). We hope you can join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking session.
