I have been an Associate Lecturer with The Open University since 2006—almost 20 years, though it certainly doesn’t feel that long. I’ve loved every moment of working with such a diverse and inspiring student and lecturing community.
Over the years, I’ve become something of a Level 1 Business Studies specialist, currently teaching on B100 Introduction to Business and Management, and its predecessor B120, as well as delivering introductory management modules. I particularly enjoy the privilege and responsibility of welcoming new students to the OU. For many students, B100 is their first step into the world of higher education and business studies. Supporting them to build confidence, develop strong academic foundations, and feel a sense of belonging within the university is incredibly rewarding. Helping students succeed, progress, and stay with us into higher-level study is at the heart of what I do.
My professional journey began as an Accounting Operations Analyst in a very famous sanitary ceramics firm called Twyford’s, but after my children were born I yearned for more meaning in my working life and so I retrained, completing a PGCE in Business and Economics Education and moved into Further Education lecturing. I spent many years teaching business studies learners from foundation level right through to Foundation Degree and Diploma in Management. As my children grew and life became increasingly busy, I sought a role with greater flexibility. Lecturing with the Open University offered the autonomy I needed while still allowing me to do what I love—support and inspire learners at all stages of their educational journey.
Fun facts: As you can see from my profile picture, I love travelling, having recently visited Egypt, Madeira and Sri Lanka. When I was 18, I won silver at a British National Tae Kwon Do sparring competition. More recently, I’ve rekindled my interest in martial arts through the much gentler practice of Tai Chi, and I’m currently learning Peking 24 Form. It’s wonderfully relaxing and helps me stay grounded amidst the challenges of a busy life.
