Emerita Professor Susan Segal-Horn

Photo of Emerita Professor Susan Segal-HornSusan is Emerita Professor of International Strategy at The Open University Business School. Susan was previously Professor of International Strategy at the University of Kent. She worked for several years in the Strategy Group at Cranfield School of Management. She has been Visiting Professor in International Business at the Ecole Nationale de Ponts et Chaussees in Paris, and in Corporate Strategy at the Graduate School, University of Notre Dame, USA. Susan acts as a consultant and facilitator for strategy workshops in the UK and internationally, with government departments, national and multinational companies and professional service firms.

Her research focus is on international competition and the globalisation of industries and firms. She specialises in global strategies in service industries and within multinational service firms. Industry sectors covered by past and present research include: airlines, hotel chains, retailing, advertising, some financial service sectors and several types of professional services such as accounting, management consulting and, most recently, law firms. Susan is a frequent speaker at international conferences, regularly presenting her research on international growth in services and the issues facing companies as a result of globalisation, anti-globalisation and the development of regional trading blocs. Her current major research project is the globalisation of law firms, with a focus on how to manage cross-border integration.

Susan has published four books and more than 70 academic articles. Two of her books (The Dynamics of International Strategy, International Thomson Business Press, 1999 and The Strategy Reader, Blackwell, Oxford, 2nd edition 2004) are recommended texts at many business schools. She has written a new major textbook in the field of international strategic management International Strategy: the dynamics of global management which was published by Cengage Learning in 2009. From 2002-2005 she was the Editor of the European Business Journal.

Her articles have appeared in such journals as Journal of Marketing Management, Service Industries Journal, Interantional Journal of Service Industry Management, Journal of World Business, European Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Global Marketing, European Management Journal, European Business Journal and Strategy and Leadership. She is Chair of the Global Strategy Interest Group for the Strategic Management Society and has served as an elected member of the Council of the British Academy of Management.
