Professional biography

Sharon is a senior lecturer and Regional Manager for B(ZX)629 (Managing 2: marketing and finance); B322 (Investigating entrepreneurial opportunities) and B324 (Marketing and society). She has worked as presentation/production Module Chair for B615 and B690, working with students globally and with partners based in Russia, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. She is currently a member of the module team for B629.

In addition, she leads and participates in projects which feed into teaching and learning across the Open University. For example, she acted as the Business Lead for 3 institutional projects linked to the provision of tailored curriculum-based student support (as Lead for the Student Support Tool, student allocation and the development of the MILLS framework for the Student Support Team Implementation). She also chaired the team which has recently developed a new OU policy for the ethical use of learning analytics.

Current research interests relate to ethical issues in learning analytics. She has several publications and conference papers (receiving three best paper awards) and has undertaken research into areas of online teaching and learning and the internationalisation of the curriculum.

Sharon previously worked for a large environmental consultancy in a number of roles, including as a senior benchmarking consultant, group manager and mathematical modeller, and has published articles relating to both benchmarking and the impact of climate change. She has a PhD in mathematical control theory.

Research interests

My current research interests relate to learning analytics, with a particular focus on ethical issues. This research has contributed to the development of a framework and a set of principles for the ethical use of student data for tracking progress and providing support. More recent work relates to the concept of educational triage and an ethics of care.

Previous research has related to developments in online teaching and methods of supporting and developing tutors and students in this medium, including reflective learning and to consideration of issues around the internationalisation of the curriculum. Previous benchmarking experience has also focused on best practice and metrics benchmarking, primarily applied to the environmental industry.
