Professional biography

Cristina joined the Open University Business School in February 2014 as a Lecturer in Organisation Studies. Prior to that, she worked as a Lecturer at Northampton Business School  from 2011, after receiving her PhD from the University of Southampton.  Cristina is a Chartered Psychologist from the British Psychology Society and CIPD graduate with background in both occupational psychology and Human Resource Management. She has recently completed her PGCTHE and become Fellow member of the Higher Education Academy.  During her PhD and academic roles, Cristina has also engaged on consultancy activities including stress audits,  conflict management, communication and emotion skills training for companies in Spain and UK. Prior to her full time academic posts, Cristina worked in different HR roles in the UK  (at the NHS and the University of Southampton) and as an Occupational Psychologist  in Spain (HC Energy).

Her research interests are primarily about the interplay between work and health, with a particular focus on emotion regulation processes and psychological recovery. She is a member of the Work Life Balance working group from the Occupational Psychology Division of the British Psychology Society. Cristina has conducted research on the impact of emotion work in employees’ well-being in Spain and the UK as part of her doctoral studies. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator on a cross-national project funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust which is aimed at identifying the drivers of Compulsive Internet Use and how this can affect work and well-being. She is also interested in the role that emotion skills and emotional intelligence play on student’s reflective learning experiences, and has conducted some research in this area. Her latest paper has been published in the Journal of Computers in Human Behaviour and can be accessed for free up till February 2015. Research interests

Cristina’s research interests focus on emotions at work; including emotion regulation and emotional intelligence; compulsive internet use; work-life balance, stress and psychological recovery, and overall employee well-being.

Teaching interests

In her previous roles Cristina designed and led Organisational Behaviour modules at Postgraduate and Undergraduate level, she also taught Cross-Cultural Management, Research Methods and and HR modules.

At the OU,  Cristina is Co-Chair of   "People and Organisations"   (B628). She is also academic member of the MBA elective module "Creative Management" (B842), and  the MSc compulsory modules "The HR Professional" (B863),  "Workplace Learning with Coaching and Mentoring" (B867) .

Cristina is  PhD Examiner at the School of Psychology from Autonoma University of Madrid where she is often invited as Guest Lecturer. She is also Guest Lecturer at the School of Management at the University of Southampton,  School of Marketing from Lincoln University and School of Tourism and Hospitality at Leeds Metropolitan University

Impact and engagement

 
Cristina's  current project on compulsive internet use has  received great press coverage so far.  Following the dissemination of her first paper from this project she was invited to appear at the BBC News TV show,  she was asked to write a specialist HR blog about it and the work has been referred to in different online newspapers. Previously, Cristina’s research on the impact of emotion work on burnout  also had good press coverage following the dissemination of her paper at the British Psychology Society Conference in January 2011. She was interviewed about her work in different radio shows including BBC Radio World Services newshour, BBC Radio 5 and BBC Northampton.  Also, her work was referred to in various online and printed press outlets.
