Black History Month: how the OU will be celebrating

Open University Black History Month Logo

This October, the nation will be recognising Black History Month (BHM) – an annual celebration of the history, achievements and contributions of black people across the world. The Open University will be marking the occasion by sharing inspirational stories and experiences of our black students, alumni and staff.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be publishing an interview with Darren Harris, a blind Paralympian, footballer, public speaker and honorary OU graduate with a post-doctorate diploma in psychology. Darren will discuss his life and career achievements, what BHM means to him and why he’s proud to be associated with the OU.

Darren’s interview will appear on OU News and the Your Stories section of Alumni Association, along with other heartening interviews with OU graduates. The OU’s Law School will also be publishing a series of Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) student case studies throughout the month.

The team from OpenLearn, our free learning site, have been working hard on building a BHM hub page. There’s lots to engage with from thought-provoking articles, podcast suggestions to free courses. Find out more about inspiring black women from across the globe; black arts and culture; the Civil Rights Movement and black people in sport. There’s plenty to explore.

If you’re an OU student, check StudentHome for a calendar of events and details on how to get involved.
